Best of both worlds: Managing TDD and FDD cells in an LTE network

Most early LTE roll outs tended to favor Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD-LTE), with Time Division Duplexing (TD-LTE) technology being almost ignored in some markets. But that’s changing fast as TD-LTE gains ground, either as a first choice for 4G or as a way of adding extra capacity to an FDD-LTE based network.

With ten frequency bands defined by 3GPP, TD-LTE can provide valuable extra spectrum for operators in most countries: TDD spectrum is available for 60% of the world’s population and 50% of the world’s land mass.

Terminal vendors have not been sitting idly. More than 200 TD-LTE capable devices are on the market – 71% support TD-LTE at 2.6 GHz, with 66% supporting 2.3 GHz.

There are several ways to deploy both TD-LTE cells and FDD-LTE cells in the same network to complement each other. Using all spectrum efficiently depends on being able to shift traffic between the TD-LTE and FDD-LTE cells. And that is where NSN can help.

A new white paper from NSN details a special algorithm that allows networks to offload and balance traffic as needed, across and between numerous cells in FDD-LTE and TD-LTE deployments. The algorithm alters the handover threshold between two neighbouring cells, effectively expanding the lightly loaded cell slightly while shrinking the heavily loaded cell.

The result is that existing networks get a performance boost, an effect particularly noticeable at the cell edge. A recent demonstration showed that user equipment throughput at the cell edge was over four times higher using the special algorithm.

The ultimate payoff is that operators get the most efficient use of their assets and users get a first rate experience – and that really is the best of both worlds.
