Regulators move to modernize 9-1-1 system

Telecom regulators opened Monday an inquiry into emergency 9-1-1 phone services, seeking to modernize the first-responder system for a world where Internet connected smartphones are rising to replace traditional telephones.

Connected mobile devices like the iPhone and the robust networks on which they run present an “opportunity to build a system that could provide new and enhanced features and capabilities,” regulators said.

Changes could include the use of multimedia applications such as pictures, videos and medical records, which would be sent to paramedics responding to an emergency.
